Farming with nature: helping our wildlife and our food system
Nature underpins the production of our food. It cleans the water and air we need to survive, and helps to store carbon to keep our climate in balance. But these can’t happen so effectively now nature is under threat. The situation is serious, but farmers and businesses can help provide the solution.
Agriculture covers 70% of the UK, so it has a huge impact on our environment. So much of our wildlife calls this land home. From singing Skylarks to buzzing bumblebees, we know that to save nature we must put nature at the heart of the way we produce our food.
Fair to Nature: restoring biodiversity
Fair to Nature is an advisory service, supply chain partner and certification scheme, run by the RSPB, the UK’s largest wildlife conservation charity. Working across the supply chain, the ambitions of Fair to Nature are:
- To help protect and restore nature on farmland
- To make it easier for people to recognise sustainable products
- To support businesses that are committed to making a genuine difference.
Engaging with consumers on issues they care about
There is a reason we love birds in the UK. They tell stories, evoke memories, and become part of our daily lives.
Research shows that people in the UK care about nature and want to support farmers and brands who protect it.
Taking action within your supply chain to restore and protect nature is a way to reduce instability in supply chains, and enact the change that consumers want to see.
How does Fair to Nature work?
The Fair to Nature Standard is designed to help farm wildlife thrive and help farm businesses become more resilient. It does this through recommending ways to create, manage and restore a range of high-quality habitats, which have been scientifically proven to reverse wildlife declines, whilst managing their soils and inputs in more sustainable ways.
COLLABORATING
WITH FARMERS
The RSPB is working with farmers to share practical nature-friendly farming techniques based on scientific research. These show you can produce food in ways which work for farmers, for wildlife and for us. On-the-ground RSPB advisors can sign-post the best way to access Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) funding that works for nature.
